World price of copper

The world price of copper is going up…up…up. Copper sellers are starting to feel the pinch and some are even closing up their retail and online stores. Copper Sinks Direct is planning to do what we can to keep our prices fair and have no plans on going anywhere. You can feel confident buying our copper sinks and accessories. As an industry leader, we plan on sticking out the increased costs and keep supplying the best handcrafted Mexican copper sinks.

Purity of Copper…how pure is it?

There is no such thing as a 99.99% pure copper sink, The only Copper Alloy that is that pure is considered “Commercially Pure” C12200, and that is 99.92 – 99.97 pure copper. The problem is that copper that is solid copper or that pure, causes problems in TIG welding and the metal spinning process which is a step in the process of manufacturing copper sinks.

Our copper sinks are comprised of approx. 97% pure copper with the trace addition of Zinc and Phosphorus. The two additional elements are beneficial in the durability of a copper sinks, and it helps in the manufacturing process of the sinks. In the smelting process, the laminadora specifically adds Zinc to the batch. The Phosphorus is typically already included in the copper, due to the fact the copper scrap, plumbing pipes, wire, ect, all are made with an Alloy of copper that contains Phosphorus for additional durability.

Our products are much different then others been sold in the US. We have had our shop IAPMO certified, and we also only use certified SEMARNAT materials. SEMARNAT, is the environmental agency that inspects and certifies smelters or what are called “Laminadoras” in Mexico. Laminadora Patzcuaro, where all of our raw materials are produced, is the only smelter that is certified and is annually inspected by the Mexican version of the EPA to ensure low emissions, and to ensure they are environmentally friendly.

Their Certification is posted here:

Buyer Beware not all Copper Sinks are created equally as good!!!

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Tonight I answered the live chat to speak with Ron. He had a dilemma; His drain didn’t fit his copper oval lavatory sink and he couldn’t figure out why. After hearing his problem, he sent me some photos and much to his dismay the drain opening in his lavatory sink was the 2″ size for a bar drain. Well, having installed that copper sink and its mate under granite and after having the plumber out to install the sink, he was told that the drain that came with his faucet was too small. He chose to contact Copper Sinks Direct to find a solution.

Unfortunately, Ron did NOT buy his sink from Copper Sinks Direct. It was not a genuine Copperhead Sink; it had no IAPMO approval or UPC code. He paid nearly what he would have paid to buy it from us, but he went local and got it from his granite supplier. He did not purchase a top quality copper sink, he got something lower than second grade and he got what we would have scrapped.

I tell all that read this blog Ron’s story, because even if you are an informed consumer, something that one would never consider would be the size of a drain in a bathroom sink. Well, the American standard drain opening size for a lavatory sink is 1 1/2″. The standard for a bar is 2″ and the standard for a prep or kitchen sink is 3 1/2″. This is an industry standard, not a standard just for copper sinks.Another thing to consider when buying a copper sink; the drain that you use for a lavatory sink cannot have an overflow. Drains that come with your faucets, will not work unless your plumber is creative in sealing off that overflow hole. This was another issue Ron would have had as he was trying to use the drains that came with his faucets. Now Ron did not buy his sinks from Copper Sinks Direct, but I will do what I can to help him get the situation resolved. Ron has already had the granite cut and the sinks installed. He will not be able to get another piece of granite fabricated, so he will have to resort to settling with what he ended up with and installing a bar drain to accommodate the oversized drain opening, or we will work together to find him a pair of sinks to fit his existing openings. Copper Sinks Direct provides only top quality copper sinks. We are involved in every step of the copper sink making process and approve all sinks before they cross the border. Should a customer have an issue, we will do everything we can to remedy that issue until we have a satisfied customer. Our copper sinks will last a lifetime and beyond. We want you to own them, use them and be proud of them for all of your lifetime.

Ron, we are here for you if we can help. Granite fabricator, shame on you! Consumers beware…not all copper sinks were created equal, not all copper sink manufacturers are alike!

So Dark is Dark, what is Medium?

The copper sinks offered by Copper Sinks Direct only come in 2 specific colors. Dark or Medium patina are our only real recommended choices. Can our factory make the other colors see offered on other sites, sure we can. But no one, including our Copperhead factory can guarntee the color of any other finishes.

Dark is what it is, the natural fire process to achieve an oxidation of the copper. Medium is the dark that has been burnished back to allow for the natural shiny copper undertone to show thru.

Will Medium oxidize to turn dark? “You bet it will.”

Can you turn it back to medium, “yes you can.”

You can burnish it back to it’s original brillance with a fine steel wool.

All you are doing is brushing away the oxidation in the high spots in the hammering to show the shiny copper underneath. The best of both worlds, you can let it darken for a change of pace, or lighten it even more should it begin to look too dark for your liking.

Will it darken immediatley? No. it will take time and would not be noticable unless there was a light spot that as made by harsh cleaners, or acidic foods. The shiny spots will darken down with in a few weeks. Otherwise, in the medium sink, you could notice the change more in the shiny areas of the sink, however, this is fixable with the brushing of the steel wool.

So Dark and Medium are the self correcting color choice that we recommend to all of our customer. Can and will we make a custom color? Sure we can, but remember, it will darken.

The dark patina can be incorporated into the rustic as well as the contemporary stlyes.

Have a question? Let me help you find your answer.

More blogs to come…lots to say, not enough time in the day.

Jill

Dark turns light, what to do?

Dark is the most requested and purchased color (patina). Dark is the natural progression of the copper color in the oxidation process. It is achieved with a heat process to accelerate the oxidation of the copper, or to age it. The dark patina, if lightened for any reason, will darken over time and with use. It is not an automatic process, but it does indeed start to darken in a matter of weeks, sometimes even days.

We have copper sinks installed in our offices so that we can visually see what changes may occur. Low and behold, one of the girls decided to clean the bathroom with a cleaner equal to the chemicals in toilet bowl cleaner. Much to her dismay, it immediately turned the copper sink shiny anywhere the chemical touched. Fearing she was to be fired, she fested up to her wrong choice of cleaners. She was surprised to find out that I was not mad, yet intriged as to how long and what changes would happen as the sink “repaired itself”, or darkened as we claim.

Well, it was at least a week, maybe two and it start to tarnish back to a dull shiny, then a week later, I noticed it was getting more dirty penny looking. It’ s now been a little over a month and it’s back to the dark color range that we started with. Needless to say, anyone cleaning the sink, now uses the recommended soap and water method…works like a charm.

One other observation, where the sink had been lightened was toward the front of the bowl that does not recieve a lot of water/air use. Still, it darkened without the constant contact the rest of the sink received with the washing of hands.

My final comment on colors. Dark is the natural progression of the copper in the aging (oxidation) process. There are several colors on the market these days that are quite beautiful. You will notice disclaimers that color is not guarnteed and may change with use. It will turn DARK as it does naturally. If it’s sealed with a laquer, it could change, should the sealer crack or wear. Dark is natural, natural is best and can be utilized in a rustic or contempory setting.

If you have any questions, please post them and I will be glad to offer you assistance.

Will blog about Copperhead Copper Sinks again soon…thanks for reading.

Myth: Our sinks are comparable to other top brand names.

While checking up on other sites selling copper, I come across some pretty interesting comments. I would like to use the Copper Sinks Direct Blog to dispell some of the myths out there.

Like this one: “Our sinks are comparable to other top brand names.”

Of course any reseller of copper sinks or any other products out there are free to make any claims they want, or that they have been told by whom ever they are buying from.

Well, I’m here to tell you the Copperhead Sinks experience first hand.

My husband and I started Copperhead Sinks some 5 years ago. We started by using a middleman to purchase sinks from a factory in Mexico. This factory was supposed to be an exclusive factory in Mexico making sinks for the only big name copper reseller in the U.S. Well, so much for being exclusive, we started buying from the same factory. Everything seemed to be going smoothly at first. We had a website built, purchased a small quantity of copper sinks and a toll free number and off we went. Well, business boomed and we were in over our heads from the beginning. Suddenly, the factory was too busy to get our stuff to us in a timely fashion. Then we’d get products and they wouldn’t be what we were expecting, the quality was starting to suffer and we were left wonder what to do next.

Well, my husband started going to the factory, keeping watch of what was going on. Trying to get a handle on why they couldn’t keep up etc. Our days of purchasing those “comparable brands” was going to be short lived. It wasn’t very long before my husband with some help from some of the best artisans in the business started his own shop in the mountains of Mexico. Suddenly, we weren’t purchasing a comparable brand, wer were becoming a brand, the Copperhead Sinks Brand. Copperhead Sinks, makes sinks for the online retail sales of Copper Sinks Direct. We don’t have a storefront in Mexico, we don’t sell Copperhead Sinks to anyone other than Copper Sinks Direct.

Do other places sell Copper Sinks, sure they do, but you won’t know where they come from and if any special care was given to them before they made it to your door. If you buy a Copperhead Sink, know that they come from a little town in Mexico, made in a shop run by an American, who makes all his sinks for Copperhead.

We also took the next step in our quest for quality and had our sinks tested to the standards of the Universal Plumbing Code (UPC) for quality inspections of our copper sinks and our facility in Mexico. If the copper sinks on other sites want to say they are comparable, then they need to show their IAPMO approval, then and only then will there be something to compare, other than the claim that their sinks are made in Mexico.

Now, years later, my husband remains in Mexico to ensure that our copper sinks artisans maintain the highest level of craftsmanship possible. He is constantly creating new designs and working on more efficient ways of getting the sinks manufactured and shipped to our warehouse in Dallas, Texas. We strive to make sure that our copper sinks are the best in the business.

We run our operation so that custom work is a welcome challenge for our excellent team of coppersmiths and artisans. Custom sizes and designs are not a problem for our copper shop, we can create and ship within a matter of days.

Copperhead Sinks cannot be compared to anyone else. If you own a Copperhead Sinks, then you know you have the best copper sink, direct to you from an American in Mexico.

Next topic to comment on…”Pure Copper Sinks”, 100% pure copper sinks, get proof, as I have yet to find anyone that can prove it. More in my next post…
